Bonding with Food & Drink

One of life's pleasures I enjoy the most is catching up with friends over food and drink.
It's one of the best parts of going home.

There's nothing better than a nice iced mocha while you catch up with a girlfriend on a hot afternoon.

Except maybe also being able to appreciate the quirkiness around every corner in Penang.
Spot the blue heart?

All those desserts!!! Definitely want to come back again, preferably not right after a heavy meal so I can try these.

These were taken at siTigun on Nagore road.

Breakfast for Two at 67 Coffee Mansion

It was one of those rare days when the hubby and I had no errands planned...and so, we decided to treat ourselves to a leisurely breakfast at 67 Coffee Mansion. The cafe is housed in a pre-war bungalow on Irving Road (just off Macalister/Anson Road).

The parking was relatively easy. Plenty of parking along the road and we were able to get a spot just a short distance from the cafe.We were the first customers at the shop when we arrived about 15 minutes after opening time.

After placing our orders for 2 Belgium Chocolate Sticks (yes, Belgium. That's what they called it on the menu), a Mushy Piggy and a Pork & Roll at the counter, we sat down at a table by the door and took their cute decor.

"I love this wall decor with the words spelled out using coffee beans. So cute and so true!

We thought the way the Belgium Chocolate Stick was served was cute. Stirring the chocolate block into the steaming hot cup of milk was fun and to our delight, it dissolved easily.

Soon, we could smell the wonderful aroma of bacon frying coming from the kitchen and shortly after our food came.

The Mushy Piggy...cute name for Eggs Benedict.

Pork & Roll.Yum...
The food was good although they seemed like rather small portions for us to big eaters. We managed to have a quiet and enjoyable meal before other customers started to file in - there seemed to be more of a lunch crowd. Overall I'd say the place is worth a visit and I'm personally keen to go back and try their main courses and desserts for lunch or dinner.

Happiness is to enjoy the little things in life.

little things

Say hello to the cutest little present I've received this Christmas!

Hand sewn by the very lovely SY, this little sweetheart has yet to be given a name.
Suggestions anyone? Comments welcome below!

Another super random discovery over Christmas were these really yummy honey waffles D brought back from Holland.
Doesn't look particularly impressive like that, does it? But one bite, and I was smitten.

I've gone and Googled it, and it turns out, these can be ordered online! Hmmm...tempting!

Yes, of course it's always food with me.
Omnomnomnomnom!!!

Moustache Houze

Over the past year or so, the whole idea of quaint little cafés seems to have caught on and there seems to be a new one to explore every time I go home.

The latest one I've checked out: Moustache Houze.

I love fads. Either going all out and being totally into them, or just being all snarky about how dumb most of them are. But one of the fads I've taken the latter disposition to has to be the whole moustache pattern thing  - I mean seriously what is with wearing a top with moustaches printed all over it? It just makes no sense...and makes me feel a tad squeamish.
But then again who am I to talk when I put this little pic together?

So back to the cafe. Seriously how does one build a business around a passing fad? I went doubtful and with my most cynical mindset in play.

It's still pretty beyond me why people are all so ready to engage with these props & photo ops that don't really mean anything to me. But what the heck, I didn't really like how crowded the counter area was - so I sat around and took pictures while the guys ordered for me.
Because I was there around Halloween.
Am I the only one who finds the floating books with moustaches a little bit of a weird force-fit?

And what quirky little cafe in Penang would be complete without the furniture made from vintage doors or grilles?

Moh Moh Instagramming his drink & cake (green tea and, I think, red bean..ick), while KW and I attempt selfies celebrating our BRFs.

So, this is supposedly the specialty here - their "Special Ice Cube". The lack of the plural form in the name, when there are several flavours available, and two cubes in a glass, totally bugs me. But okay, whatever. It was pretty awesome. These are the kiwi and pineapple ones.

Pretty much a fruit popsicle in a glass.

Pour soda water into the glass, and voila!

Not particularly loving this place. But would totally go back again to just hang out in the smaller rooms upstairs. Oh yeah, the bathrooms, as we found out from the super cute waiter, are upstairs. You'll need to take your shoes off, and climb up the steep and narrow staircase. Remember to stay clear of the people carrying trays of their drinks and food up to the rooms. And, you know, give people the "Will you walk faster?" look as they balance their trays up the stairs, and you wait practically forever for them to get to the landing so you can go back downstairs.

Disclaimer: Recently went to dinner with a couple of friends - one an actual food writer, the other a chef. The writer lamented how many a blogger out there writes a lot about food, without knowing head or tail about food at all. My silence led to both of them looking at me while the writer very carefully asked, "Nobody at this table is a food blogger, right?"
"No. Not a food blogger," was what I choked out.
So here it is - read for your own entertainment only.
My relationship with food solely revolves around eating - in a super normal, don't care what drink goes with what food to be eaten with what piece of cutlery sort of way. And I'm unapologetic about it.
Yum.

When you've got a Tuesday off...

You go for a late morning swim and get a case of sunburn that's so worth it!

Then, go for lunch at this little place called Coliseum.
Never really did my homework about this place, but it's apparently been around for ages in KL. And recently, they opened an outlet at Plaza 33 in PJ - the one I went to.

Be forewarned, as I rightly was, this is one of those places that seems to be talked/written about so much that it's kind of become a little over-rated; setting one up for disappointment.
So now that you've been warned, you can go in and enjoy a slightly pricey-for-its-standard meal that really isn't too bad at all.

Checking out the place while waiting for my food.

While Kenny freaked out that I was shamelessly photographing some cute guy who was walking by.
Did not notice him, by the way. Was too busy zooming in to get this pretty-if-I-may-say-so shot.

So, on to the important bit: the food!

The chicken cordon bleu that costs RM 28.90.
Yes, I'll be frank. Good. But over-rated and a tad over-priced.

But definitely satisfying enough to recharge before going in search for phone covers.
Found a super cute one with those Hello Kitty-like bows that I shall figure out how to photograph with my phone in it at some point.
